Matte is the low sheen alternative to Ezarri's standard gloss, a soft surface that scatters light instead of reflecting it. The Zen collection is its clearest expression, glass tesserae drawn from the look of stone, marble and timber with a naturally matte texture.
As the exclusive Australian distributor of Ezarri, Europe Imports supplies matte mosaics with samples, technical guidance and Australia-wide delivery.
Why choose a Matte Finish tile?
In a glass mosaic, matte refers to the texture of the surface, not to a different material or a lower grade. The body is the same fully vitrified, non-porous Ezarri glass used across the range, with the colour carried through the piece. What changes is how the face is finished. Instead of a smooth plane that returns light as a clean highlight, a matte face scatters incoming light across many small angles, so the eye reads colour and depth rather than reflection.
This is the opposite design intent to the glossy finish, and it is worth choosing deliberately. Gloss makes a surface feel bright and active. Matte makes it feel settled and dense, closer in character to natural stone, while keeping the non porous body that stone cannot offer. As a general design guide, matte finishes make colour look slightly deeper and less variable than the same colour in gloss, and they reduce the shifting highlight pattern across the shallow end.
Explore the Matte Ezarri Ranges
- Zen is the signature matte collection, taking its cues from stone, marble and timber and translating their tonal movement and quiet surface into fully vitrified glass with a naturally matte texture.
- Terrazzo sits nearby in intent, with speckled aggregate patterns that read as a natural material while behaving like glass.
- Vulcano offers a physically textured rippled face for projects that want surface movement rather than surface sheen.
Matte is offered across a narrower part of the Ezarri catalogue than gloss, so availability is the first thing to check. Formats run to 25mm and 50mm depending on the design, and Safe Step and Corner and Cove pieces are produced for selected designs only. If a softer sheen rather than a full matte is what the project wants, the iridescent and metallic finishes sit at the other end of the same scale.

Engineered in Spain, Installed in Australian Pools
Every matte Ezarri sheet is manufactured from 100% recycled glass and backed by Ezarri's patented JointPoint panelling system, which leaves 92% of the mosaic surface free for adhesive contact and follows curves, coves and detailed pool geometry. Ezarri's published technical data states it can reduce installation time by approximately 25% compared with traditional methods. Installation requirements for the shell, waterproofing, adhesive and grout are set out in our technical information area.
For designers, the combination of a matte face and a vitrified body solves a recurring problem. Stone in and around water brings porosity, sealing schedules and staining risk. A matte glass mosaic gives a similar visual register with none of those obligations: it does not absorb water, it does not need sealing, and the colour does not sit on the surface waiting to wear off. That is why Zen is so often specified where a scheme wants the calm of stone in a location where stone is hard to justify.
Where Matte Mosaic Tiles Shine
In a small ensuite or shower recess, a high gloss surface can multiply the visual clutter of fittings and reflections, while a matte face keeps the space calm. In a wellness or spa fit out, matte suits the register of the room. Behind a cooktop it reduces the reflection of downlights while remaining a non porous, wipeable surface.
A matte surface does not bounce light around a dark room the way gloss does, so in a windowless space with little artificial light, gloss may still be the better technical choice. Where a scheme wants both, matte in the field with a gloss or iridescent detail at the niche or waterline is a common resolution, and one our team can help architects and interior designers work through.
Why Customers Choose Europe Imports
Our team can confirm before you specify whether the matte design you want is produced in the format you need, whether Safe Step pieces are available for submerged steps and ledges, whether Corner and Cove pieces are produced for the waterline, and what current stock, batch and lead time look like. Ordering the full quantity at once helps colour consistency, and an allowance of around 10% for waste is a common starting point, rising to roughly 12 to 15% for curves, raised spas and detailed steps.

A matte glass mosaic is a fully vitrified glass tessera finished with a low sheen surface that scatters light instead of reflecting it. The body and the colour are the same as a glossy Ezarri tile, with the colour running through the piece rather than applied as a coating. Only the surface texture differs, which changes how the tile reads rather than how it performs.
Neither is better in general, they suit different conditions. Matte diffuses light, which reduces glare on exposed pools and supports a still, deep water look, and it sits well alongside honed or textured stone. Gloss reflects light, which brightens water and creates sparkle. View both as samples outdoors before deciding, since the difference is much clearer in daylight than on screen.
Zen is the collection best known for it, a range of glass mosaics inspired by stone, marble and timber with a naturally matte texture. Matte and low sheen surfaces appear elsewhere in the catalogue as well, and availability changes, so contact the Europe Imports team to confirm current matte options for your project.
Matte glass is non porous, so nothing is absorbed into the tile and stains cannot develop from below. A diffused surface generally shows waterline residue and scale less obviously than a reflective one, because there is no unbroken reflection to interrupt. Normal pool maintenance and routine brushing apply in either case.
Safe Step and special pieces are produced for selected designs rather than across the whole catalogue, and availability varies by collection and format. Tell us the design you are considering and the application, such as submerged steps or a beach entry, and we will confirm what is produced for that product.
Yes, and dark schemes are one of the strongest cases for matte. A dark matte interior produces a still, even, deep looking water surface rather than a mirror, which is usually the intent behind a black or charcoal pool. Bear in mind that dark interiors absorb more heat and can make the water feel warmer, which your pool builder can factor into the design.
No. Matte refers only to the surface texture of the glass. Ezarri mosaics are fully vitrified and non porous, so they do not absorb water and do not require sealing. That is one of the main reasons designers choose a matte glass mosaic where a stone look is wanted around water.
Europe Imports posts up to five free samples anywhere in Australia, and a matte finish is one that particularly rewards being seen in person and outdoors. You can also book an appointment at our Kings Park showroom to compare matte and gloss side by side, or call 1300 387 673 for advice.
