Travertine Natural Stone FAQs
Is travertine good for pool surrounds?

Travertine is one of the most specified pool surround materials in Australia. Its porous structure stays noticeably cooler than concrete or porcelain in summer heat, and travertine pavers commonly achieve a P3 to P4 slip rating depending on the product and finish. Specify a sealer suited to pool water and sanitiser, and confirm the slip rating from the product technical data sheet.

What is the difference between filled and unfilled travertine?

Filled travertine has its natural voids filled during manufacture for a smoother, more uniform surface that is easier to clean. Unfilled travertine leaves the voids open for a more textured, rustic character. The choice is mainly aesthetic, though filled travertine is often preferred where leaf litter and organic matter would otherwise collect in the voids.

Does travertine stay cool in the sun?

Travertine's porous structure means it stays noticeably cooler underfoot than concrete or porcelain on a hot day, which is a major reason it is chosen for barefoot areas around pools. Colour also plays a part, with lighter travertines generally staying cooler than darker ones.

Does travertine need to be sealed?

Yes. Travertine is porous, so a sealing specification is part of the installation, particularly around pools, in outdoor kitchens and in shaded areas. The stone, the treatment and the exposure determine the sealer and the number of coats. We supply Chemforce Stain Protector and can advise on the right approach.

What is the difference between travertine and limestone?

Travertine is a form of limestone deposited by mineral springs, which gives it natural pitting and linear layering. Most other limestone forms from marine sediment and has a calmer, more even surface. Both are porous, both benefit from sealing, and both are available from Europe Imports in paving, coping and tile formats.

Can travertine be used for a kitchen benchtop?

Travertine slabs, including Classic and Titanium Silver, are supplied for benchtops, vanities, splashbacks and feature walls. Travertine is softer and more acid reactive than quartzite and needs to be sealed, so it suits clients who value its character over a surface that stays pristine. Discuss the finish and sealing with our team before specifying.

Can I match travertine coping to my pavers?

Yes. Several of our travertines are supplied in paver, tile and coping formats, so the pool edge and surround can come from the same stone. Order them together from one batch, since travertine varies naturally between blocks and a later top up is unlikely to match exactly.

Do you deliver travertine outside Sydney?

Yes. Europe Imports is based in Kings Park, NSW and delivers Australia-wide. Travertine pavers and slabs are heavy, so tell us the delivery address, site access and quantity when you request a quote and we will confirm freight and timing.
